🧾 Educational Qualifications — Full Details

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination every year. Both share the same Preliminary Exam, but have different Mains and Interview stages.

For UPSC Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IRS, IFS [Foreign Service] etc.)

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized university or an institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a university.

Final-year students can also apply, provided they submit proof of passing before the Mains.

Degrees from distance/open universities are valid if recognized by the UGC.


For Indian Forest Service (IFS Main)

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree with at least one of the following subjects:

Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science

Botany

Chemistry

Geology

Mathematics

Physics

Statistics

Zoology
OR a Bachelor’s degree in:

Agriculture

Forestry

Engineering

The UPSC examination process is divided into three stages:

1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)

Common for Civil Services and Indian Forest Service.

Two Papers:

Paper I: General Studies – 200 Marks

Paper II: CSAT (Aptitude Test) – 200 Marks (Qualifying only; must score 33%)


Conducted to shortlist candidates for the Mains.
